CRP & SAA: Inflammation Markers Guide¶
CRP and SAA are acute-phase proteins — the fastest-rising markers of systemic inflammation. CRP is the primary canine marker; SAA is the primary feline marker. Both are quantitative and both transform inflammatory-disease management.
Species Specificity¶

Don't swap species: CRP is the dominant canine APP; SAA is the dominant feline APP. Using the wrong marker reduces sensitivity.
Why Acute-Phase Proteins Matter¶
Acute-phase proteins rise within 4–24 hours of an inflammatory stimulus — far faster than clinical signs or leukogram changes. This makes them ideal for:
- Early detection — catch inflammation before it is clinically obvious.
- Monitoring treatment — a falling CRP/SAA confirms the treatment is working.
- Differentiating disease — inflammatory vs non-inflammatory.
The Monitoring Advantage¶
A dog with pancreatitis has CRP 85 mg/L → after 3 days of treatment → CRP 20 mg/L. The trend confirms improvement, even if the patient still "looks" sick. A qualitative test cannot do this.

How fast do CRP/SAA rise? Within 4–24 hours of an inflammatory stimulus.
Can CRP/SAA diagnose a specific disease? No — they indicate inflammation, not the cause. Use with other tests to localize the disease.
Case Study: Monitoring the Pancreatitis Patient¶
A 7-year-old Schnauzer presents with vomiting and cranial abdominal pain. A presumptive diagnosis of pancreatitis is made.
- CRP at admission: 85 mg/L — severe systemic inflammation.
- Treatment: IV fluids, antiemetics, analgesia.
- CRP at 48 h: 32 mg/L — falling, confirming response.
- CRP at 96 h: 12 mg/L — near-normal.
Lesson: A qualitative test would have read "positive" every day. Quantitative CRP told the story — the trend confirmed the treatment was working before the patient visibly improved.
