Canine Parvovirus (CPV) Testing: Complete Guide

Canine parvovirus (CPV-2) causes a highly contagious, often fatal enteritis in puppies. Rapid antigen testing is the highest-volume canine infectious-disease test — and one of the highest-stakes ones.

Antigen vs Antibody

Vaccination Interference

Modified-live CPV vaccines can produce transient antigen positivity for days to weeks post-vaccination. Interpret a positive in a recently vaccinated, clinically normal dog with caution.

Can a negative rule out CPV? Not entirely — if clinical suspicion is high, retest; intermittent shedding can yield a false negative.

Case Study: The Unvaccinated Puppy

An 8-week-old, unvaccinated Labrador puppy presents with 24 hours of vomiting, profuse watery diarrhea, and lethargy. Temperature 40.1 °C, marked dehydration on exam.

  • CPV antigen (fecal): positive.
  • CRP: 62 mg/L — moderate-severe systemic inflammation.

Management: Immediate isolation, intravenous fluid therapy, antiemetics, and supportive care. CRP was repeated at 48 h: 24 mg/L — confirming response to therapy before clinical signs improved.

Lesson: A same-visit CPV result enabled isolation and treatment within the hour, and quantitative CRP turned a "positive" into a monitorable number.
