CCV, CAV, and Other Canine Pathogen Testing

Beyond CPV and CDV, several other canine pathogens are tested in small-animal practice. This page covers the secondary menu: CCV, CAV, Leishmania, and Toxoplasma.

Canine Coronavirus (CCV)

CCV causes enteritis, often co-infecting with CPV. The two are frequently tested together in a puppy with acute gastroenteritis.

Clinical pearl: a puppy with severe hemorrhagic gastroenteritis that is CPV-negative may still be CCV-positive — co-infection or CCV alone should be considered.

Canine Adenovirus (CAV)

Two adenoviruses matter clinically:

Detection is typically by antibody (serum) or PCR; antigen POCT for adenovirus is less common than for CPV/CCV.

Leishmania

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne protozoal disease with strong regional epidemiology.

FAQ

Should I test for CCV alongside CPV? In a puppy with acute gastroenteritis, yes — co-infection is common and CPV alone may not explain all signs.

When is Leishmania testing indicated? In endemic regions, or in imported dogs with compatible chronic signs (weight loss, lymphadenopathy, skin lesions).

Does CAV have a rapid antigen test? Antigen POCT for adenovirus is less established than for CPV/CCV; antibody or PCR is typically used.

Case Study: The Imported Dog

A 3-year-old dog recently imported from the Mediterranean region presents with progressive weight loss, lymphadenopathy, and a crusting skin lesion over the nose.

  • Leishmania antibody: positive (high titer).
  • Biochemistry: mild hyperglobulinemia and proteinuria.

Management: The dog was staged for leishmaniasis (renal function, proteinuria, antibody titer) and started on anti-Leishmania therapy with regular monitoring.

Lesson: Regional history is the key trigger for Leishmania testing — an imported dog with chronic, multisystemic signs warrants screening even when the classic signs are subtle.
